Installing a toilet can seem like a daunting task, but it can be done with the right tools and preparation. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to install a toilet after choosing the best one for your home:
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Toilet bowl and tank
- Toilet wax ring
- Closet bolts with nuts
- Toilet seat
- Adjustable wrench
- Screwdriver
- Level
- Putty knife
- Caulking gun (optional)
- Silicone caulk (optional)
Step 1/
Remove the Old Toilet. Turn off the water supply to the toilet and flush it to remove as much water as possible. You can use a shop vac or a sponge to remove the rest of the water. Disconnect the water supply line and unscrew the bolts securing the toilet to the floor. Carefully lift the toilet off the bolts and move it out of the way.
Step 2/
Prepare the Area: Use a putty knife to remove any old wax from the flange and surrounding area. Inspect the flange to ensure it is in good condition and make any necessary repairs.
Step 3/
Install the Closet Bolts: Insert the closet bolts into the flange with the bolts pointing upwards. Use the nuts provided to secure the bolts in place.
Step 4/
Install the Wax Ring: Place the wax ring onto the flange, making sure it is centered and level. Gently press down on the wax ring to create a seal.
Step 5/
Install the Toilet Bowl: Carefully lift the toilet bowl and place it onto the closet bolts, making sure the bolts come through the holes in the base of the toilet. Gently press down on the toilet bowl to compress the wax ring and create a seal.
Step 6/
Secure the Toilet Bowl: Install the washers and nuts onto the closet bolts and tighten them down evenly, taking care not to over-tighten and crack the toilet bowl.
Step 7/
Install the Tank: Position the tank onto the bowl and align the mounting holes. Insert the bolts and tighten them down evenly.
Step 8/
Connect the Water Supply: Connect the water supply line to the fill valve on the bottom of the tank and turn on the water supply. Check for leaks and adjust the fill valve as needed.
Step 9/
Install the Toilet Seat: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install the toilet seat onto the bowl.
Step 10/
Caulk Around the Base: Apply silicone caulk around the base of the toilet to create a seal and prevent water from seeping underneath. (Optional)
