Whenever or wherever you use water, you can always do something to conserve it. At home, there are three areas where water conservation measures can make the most impact: the kitchen, bathroom, and garden. Even a few small changes to your water usage can amount to hundreds of gallons of savings in water each year. If you want to know what you can do to help the environment, your friendly Saskatoon plumbers recommend that you put these tips into practice. Feel free to share these tips with everyone!
In the bathroom
Turn on the faucet only when using it. This means turning off the faucet when you’re soaping your body, shampooing your hair, brushing your teeth, etc. If you have to wash your razor, do so in standing and not running water. Use a bowl or put a stopper in the sink when you shave.
Shower instead of soak. Filling a bathtub usually amounts to 30 gallons of water. Meanwhile, a standard ten-minute shower only consumes 25 gallons. If you use low-flow water fixtures, you can even get that down to 20 gallons a bath.
In the kitchen
Buy a dishwasher. Washing kitchen utensils by hand not only takes more effort, but also consumes more water. Just make sure you have a full load before turning the washer on.
When throwing away garbage, prioritize the garbage can more and the garbage disposal less. The garbage disposal requires water to work so only use it on smelly items that you want to get rid of immediately.
In the garden
When watering your plants, use recycled water. You can get recycled water from the water you use to wash your food. If you can, try to place a bucket under you when you shower so you can reuse some of the water for your garden.
Spread mulch and plant groundcover around water-dependent plants in your garden. This helps keep moisture locked in the soil.
